Administrative/Biographical History Note

Dorine Dimond Goertzen was a historian and poet who lived in Magic Valley, Idaho. She was born in Twin Falls in 1916 and moved to Boise in 1951 with her husband, Vic Goertzen. Initially, Dorine worked as a journalist and writer at various newspapers in Twin Falls. She also wrote and edited for various serial publications throughout Idaho. In the mid-late twentieth century, Dorine worked for the Idaho Department of Tourism and Industrial Development and also worked to support technical and vocation educational opportunities.

Unofficial efforts of Dorine Goertzen included her work as a freelance writer, teacher, historian, poet, and volunteer with various civic groups. As part of her work, she gathered and interpreted a wide range of publications, including the newspapers she worked for in the past. She also looked at primary sources of many types. Her efforts connected the past and present of the entire state of Idaho.

Scope and Content Note

The Dorine Dimond Goertzen Collections encompasses a wide range of materials documenting the history of Magic Valley, the Boise area, and the state of Idaho in general. These materials include books, serials, newspapers, photographs, and various historical records. These materials examine the political, environmental, religious, and social histories of the area.

Items in this collection do not circulate and may be used in-house only.

Provenance

This collection was created by Dorine Dimond Goertzen. She gave her materials to the archives in two donations. The first, in 1985, consisted mostly of historical books. The second, in 1995, included photographs, newspapers, and historical records she used in her work. These donations were held in the archives from the time they were donated.

  This series contains books on the history of Magic Valley, the Boise Area, and the state of Idaho in general. There are many genres in this series, including primary sources, historical analysis works, and historical fiction.
COLL_MSS001-02: Serials, 1937-2000.
100 books occupying 20 cubic feet.
  This series contains a wide number of serials, most of which care concerned with the environmental and social history of the state of Idaho. Notable in this series are the serials INCREDIBLE IDAHO and IDAHO IMAGES.
COLL_MSS001-03: Newspapers from locations throughout Southern Idaho, 1940-1997.
11 boxes occupying 6 cubic feet.
  This series contains newspapers from Woods Cross, Shoshone, Jerome, Twin Falls, Ketchum, Boise, and other locations throughout Southern Idaho. Many centennial and celebratory newspaper pages were collected and stored together, but most of the papers are separated by title and publisher.
COLL_MSS001-04: Photographs, 1960-1969
3 boxes occupying 1 cubic foot.
  This series contains photographs of many locations throughout Southern Idaho. The most frequently covered areas are the cities of Twin Falls, Idaho and Boise Idaho.
COLL_MSS001-05: Historical Records, 1904-1909
1 box occupying .5 cubic feet.
  This series contains historical records of county and city dealings in various locales in Magic Valley, including Ketchum, Jerome, and Shoshone, and Twin Falls. Records are divided by locale as determined by Dorine Goertzen.
