Eras of Music History: Viennese Classicism The Viennese Classical period, from 1750 to 1820, is covered in this program. With even greater freedom than the Baroque period, composers during this period explored music in a range of different directions. During this period, most composers worked for private individuals - nobles and royals - and public concerts were becoming more popular. Music was considered abstract and pure, rather than depicting anything in particular, and instrumental music was more common than vocal forms. Symphonies, concertos, string quartets and sonatas ruled the day and works were not given titles, but merely called things like Piano Concerto No. 1 in C Major. Popular composers of this period include Haydn, Mozart, Schubert, and Beethoven.

He is credited for practically single-handedly standardizing the musical structures of the symphony and string quartet. We examine his monumental impact on classical music and on two of the greatest composers ever—Beethoven and Mozart.
