Open Educational Resources (OER): Create Your Own OER


The College of Southern Idaho has its own Pressbooks instance. You can retrieve books created by others at the Pressbooks Directory, but this site is the place for you to create your own OER materials. To gain access, you will need to talk to Reed Hepler, who is the Pressbooks Network Manager. He has experience creating OER materials, including items that incorporate H5P, a data format used to create interactive, formative assessments and assignments. He can help you get started and lead you from start to publishing!

OER Movement and the 5Rs Framework

"Open Educational Resources are broadly considered to meet the 5Rs Framework,” meaning that users are free to:

  1. Retain - the right to make, own, and control copies of the content (e.g., download, duplicate, store, and manage)
  2. Reuse - the right to use the content in a wide range of ways (e.g., in a class, in a study group, on a website, in a video)
  3. Revise - the right to adapt, adjust, modify, or alter the content itself (e.g., translate the content into another language)
  4. Remix - the right to combine the original or revised content with other material to create something new (e.g., incorporate the content into a mashup)
  5. Redistribute - the right to share copies of the original content, your revisions, or your remixes with others (e.g., give a copy of the content to a friend)

(Defining the "Open" in Open Content and Open Educational Resources


After you have created your own OER item, you have a responsibility to make it available to other people. Luckily, we have a way to facilitate this action. You or Reed can put it on the NIAL OER Collections Repository on OER Commons. You can easily become a member and upload or save your OER materials to this site.

The OER Starter Kit

Guidelines for Open Educational Resources in Higher Education
