Musical Geography: Mapping Place and Movement throughout Music History "How can mapping change the way we think about music history?" This "deceptively simple" question is posed on the homepage of Musical Geography, a fascinating collection of projects that explore the intersections of music, geography, and time. Musical Geography was launched in 2015 by Louis Epstein, a professor of music and musicology at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota. Epstein initially teamed up with four St. Olaf students to create a map of the vibrant music scene of 1924 Paris. Since then, Epstein has worked with two additional student research teams to create additional projects about the geography of music history. Visitors can explore these projects in the Maps section of this website. These projects include "Mapping the Collection of Russian Folk Songs in the Long 19th Century," "Mapping Black Gospel Music," and "The Second Viennese School in Russia." Each of these projects features at least one map (including maps created using Google Maps, ArcGIS, and JS StoryMap) and a short essay. Musical Geography offers a useful resource for instructors and researchers of history and musicology. In addition, this resource may offer inspiration for researchers interested in pursuing their own mapping projects. Switched on Pop Hosted by Nate Sloan, a music professor at Fordham University, and musician and songwriter Charlie Harding, Switched on Pop is a podcast dedicated to "the making and meaning of popular music." Each episode of this podcast is dedicated to a single contemporary song and, occasionally, a pop song from yesterday. To do so, they often invite a guest musician on the show to discuss the song's lyrics, musical characteristics, and influences. Although each episode is singled on one particular song, Sloan, Harding, and guests usually end up discussing a number of songs in the podcast. On this website, listeners will find a list of discussed songs listed alongside each episode. Recent episodes of Switched on Pop have featured discussions of "After the Storm" by Kali Uchis, Tyler the Creator, and Bootsy Collins; "HUMBLE" by Kendrick Lamar; and "I Get Around" by the Beach Boys
TeachRock: The Music that Shaped America History and social studies educators may be interested in this set of lesson plans from TeachRock, a project of Steven Van Zandt's Rock and Roll Forever Foundation that provides free arts integration curricular materials. This collection features four standards-aligned lesson plans appropriate for use in AP History classes that may be taught individually or as a unit. These lessons "[draw] on the rich archive of Alan Lomax's Association for Cultural Equity, enlivening American history of the 18th through early 20th centuries with the sounds of regional folk musics and the personal stories of its performers." Each innovative lesson focuses on a different aspect of US social history, incorporating music as well as other resources. For example, one lesson uses the music of Nimrod Workman as part of its discussion of the mining industry and unions during the Gilded and Progressive Ages, while other lessons focus on the abolition of slavery, Cajun farmers, and more. Classroom handouts, media clips, and readings are included, as are suggestions for extension activities and further exploration. Visitors can access two lesson plans without logging in, and free account registration is needed to access all of TeachRock's available curricula.

Delivering Wider Opportunities Three music tutors from Somerset council show how music may be successfully taught in a whole class situation to pupils of mixed ability and enthusiasm. Exploring the teaching techniques used at the Samba, ukelele and brass classes in three primary schools, we see how it is possible to include every pupil in class and how a general understanding of music can be attained.
Developing Composition A case study looking at how to help KS2 classes develop simple ideas into a structured piece of music, in this case a piece of music with three sections, composed to reflect the emotions of WW2 evacuees Dianne Campbell teaches the Year 4 class at White Oak School in Swanley, Kent. In this programme Dianne and her teaching assistant Norma Kinnison work on a composition using simple percussion, based on work the class have been doing in History about children who were evacuated from London during the Second World War. Diane and Norma do some planning work with Gwyneth Johnson the School's Music co-ordinator and composer Stephen Chadwick, and then they help the class to develop a composition on the theme.
Drumming Up Success Steve Dawson has transformed his school's music department and restored pride in the school through playing drums. Following its damning Ofsted report, Dawson was sent to Newcastle-under-Lyme Community High School. Using his observations of how engaging drum beating could be, he raised enough money for every class member to have their own West African djhemba. It has become obvious that playing the drum boosts pupils' self-esteem, and being part of a band teaches them to respect others. Participation in the band has led to less behavioural problems and exclusions. This programme shows how Steve's enthusiasm and drive transformed the music department and had positive effects throughout the school.
Exploring Sounds Penny Smith teaches Year 2 'Apple Class' at White Oak School in Swanley, Kent. She doesn't have a lot of experience teaching music, but in this programme Penny and her teaching assistant Marion Dowell work on a composition task with the class and show how any primary teacher, regardless of their musical ability, can do the same. First of all, Penny and Marion do some planning work with Gwynneth Johnson, the School's Music co-ordinator, and composer Stephen Chadwick, but the approach demonstrated here can of course be used without this level of support. In their literacy class the day before, the children have drawn pictures of some story endings: a robot falls down stairs; a car crashes into a wall. Stephen and Penny looked through these pictures to find those most suited to the musical task they've selected where pairs of children work to create a simple sound pattern which continues and then suddenly stops.
Managing Music at KS1 Many Primary teachers are required to teach music despite having had little or no musical training. Primary music advisor Helen MacGregor offers teacher Louise Harvey Wells some valuable tips for managing music at Key Stage 1. The class explores quiet and loud body sounds, which Louise develops into a notation activity that the pupils work on in pairs, creating musical scores which they later perform.
Managing Music at KS2 Primary teachers are often required to teach music despite having had little or no musical training. Primary music advisor Helen MacGregor offers teacher Steve Owen support and advice as he teaches two Year 6 music classes. Using pop songs as a starting point for composition, the class is shown working on the early lessons of this unit as they create the verses and chorus of their new song using simple rhythmic patterns. The pupils work on beat and rhythm and are given the opportunity to perform their patterns on percussion. Owen is then able to assess the pupils' rhythmic skills before they move onto recording using notation software. The session highlights some key vocabulary, which will become the focus of later ICT work.

Singing for Teachers: An INSET Workshop Getting children to sing is not usually difficult, but helping them to improve can be a challenge for non-specialists. Teachers who lack confidence in their own singing find it hard to introduce and nurture key singing skills in the classroom. This programme focuses on an INSET workshop with teachers and support staff at Cecil Road Primary School. run by Kent LEA music advisor, Helen MacGregor. Helen takes the teachers and support staff through a progression of warm-ups, chants and songs to help find and develop the voice and to explore range, character and pitch. To the surprise of some participants, the workshop culminates in part-singing and pleasing harmonies. The activities demonstrated in the workshop are designed for use in both with both KS1 and KS2 classes.
Singing for Teachers: Strategies in the Classroom The programme is the second in a pair of programmes tackling the issue of singing skills and confidence, it is extremely relevant to non-specialist teachers delivering Music in the KS1/2 classroom, and focuses on applying the techniques shown in programme 1. Most young children love to sing, but teachers who lack confidence in their own singing find it difficult to introduce and nurture singing skills in the classroom. This programme follows up on an INSET workshop that was delivered to staff at Cecil Road Primary School by Kent LEA music advisor, Helen MacGregor. Helen re-visits the school to see how they're doing. She looks at Reception, Year 1, Year 4 and Year 5 teachers to see how they are using the warm-ups, chants and songs she has taught them with their pupils.
