Obtaining Your Degree Online

The primary focus of the Library and Information Science program is the Associate of Arts degree, which prepares students to enter library and information careers. Our students acquire the knowledge, skills, and values that are fundamental to professional competence in the library and information services field.

Because information services today are heavily dependent on computers and online resources, the curriculum includes a great deal of hands-on practice with these tools. The choice of electives includes courses in computer applications and business management, which are useful for work in any kind of library. Students are able to complete the Associate of Arts degree in Library and Information Science completely online.

Many of our graduates work as paraprofessionals (library technicians) in local public and elementary school libraries, as well as in the CSI Library. The program also attracts library staff and school teachers who are looking for a few courses to update their skills, earn recertification credits, or fill the State requirements for the Education Media Generalist endorsement.

Planning for the Future

LIIS faculty provide advising and counseling for students who are considering library and information science careers. There are several possible career tracks in public, school, and academic libraries. Students intending to become secondary school librarians in Idaho need to know about the educational and certification requirements set by the State. Those interested in becoming professional librarians need to make long-term plans, considering such things as the type of library they wish to work in, a subject specialty, and management training they might wish to pursue on their way to an American Library Association accredited MLS/MLIS degree.

The department also provides courses in basic library skills and information literacy that are open to all CSI students. These courses are intended to introduce students to the variety and complexity of today’s digital world, and to provide the concepts and skills needed to make the best use of them.

The Next Step

Completion of the LIIS program of study is designed to result in an Associate of Arts degree in Library and Information Science, and meets the general education requirements at all Idaho public universities. Some of our graduates will work as paraprofessionals (library technicians), while others may choose to continue their studies at various four-year institutions. Students intending to become librarians should consider pursuing an American Library Association accredited MLS/MLIS degree. Requirements for school librarians (Education Media Generalists/Library Media Specialists) vary from state to state, but generally include valid teaching credentials with a special media endorsement or certification. Although some courses in our program may be transferable to various four-year programs, transferability will depend on the specific requirements of the college in question, and therefore students who plan on continuing their education in the field, should talk to their advisor very early in their academic career and will need to work closely on course selection with the institution to which they are planning to transfer.

 Graduates of the Library and Information Science program will be able to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the history, philosophy, principles, policies and ethics of library and information science.
  • Understand the basics of information seeking behavior.
  • Understand procedures for selection, acquisition, circulation, maintenance and weeding of library materials.
  • Explain the purpose and importance of the catalog.
  • Demonstrate understanding of subject headings, and use current and appropriate cataloging and classification schemes.
  • Articulate current issues and trends in the field.
  • Understand how information is created and the various media used to store and communicate information.
  • Demonstrate understanding of information organization, storage, retrieval, evaluation, dissemination, and utilization.
  • Explain the principles of information literacy.
  • Recognize and analyze information needs and effectively and efficiently locate, retrieve, evaluate, and disseminate information.
  • Apply concepts of user-centered customer service in meeting the information needs of individuals, groups and organizations.
  • Understand the information needs of diverse users and communities (varying cultural, educational, socio-economic backgrounds, and users with disabilities).
  • Assist patrons in using information to solve problems and take advantage of opportunities.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of research techniques and methods.

  • Demonstrate knowledge of print and electronic resources, as well as information retrieval processes and procedures.

  • Summarize, synthesize, and communicate information in a variety of formats.

Mission Statement

The mission of the Library and Information Science Department is to provide a meaningful educational experience that meets current and emerging library, information and technology needs, and prepares students for productive roles in a variety of continually evolving information environments, or to continue their education at four-year institutions. The department also provides basic library skills and information literacy training for CSI students in general.

Goals & Objectives

 To carry out its mission, the Library and Information Science department established the following goals and objectives:

  1. Provide quality advising and counseling for students considering to enter the library and information science profession.
    • Assist students with understanding the various career choices available in the field.
    • Help students understand the qualifications needed for those positions.
    • Help students with selection of appropriate courses, in the appropriate sequence, in order to ensure that they meet their educational goals.
    • Assist students who wish to continue their education at four-year institutions.
  2. Ensure that LIIS students acquire the knowledge, skills, and values that are fundamental to professional competence in the library and information services field.
    • Provide high quality, effective and relevant instruction and experiences in a student-centered and technologically advanced learning environment.
    • Foster engaged learning and discovery, and encourage students to take responsibility for their learning.
    • Effectively incorporate current and emerging relevant instructional and information technologies throughout the curriculum.
    • Maximize accessibility of our courses by making the LIIS program a completely online program where students can attend classes any time, anywhere from a computer with Internet connection.
    • Provide a broad understanding of library and information science and prepare students to provide library and information services in a rapidly changing technological and global society.
    • Provide opportunities to develop and practice: critical thinking, problem-solving, communication, organization, and leadership skills.

  3. Provide general library skills and information literacy training for all students at CSI.
    • Provide library skills and information literacy credit courses as well as help faculty incorporate information literacy in their curricula.
    • Assist with the campus-wide assessment of information literacy initiatives.
  4. Provide leadership in the field of library and information science in south central Idaho.
    • Provide training, consulting, professional development, and continuing education opportunities for library and information service professionals in the area.
    • Offer courses that fulfill requirements of the Idaho State Department of Education’s Education Media Generalist/Library Media Specialist endorsement and teacher recertification.
    • Collaborate with the K-12 educational community and librarians in the area to promote information literacy initiatives.
    • Participate in the sharing of resources and expertise.
    • Encourage faculty to take on leadership responsibilities in relevant organizations in the field.
  5. Build lasting relationships with students and graduates.
    • Maintain contact with LIIS students and alumni.
    • Invite alumni to speak to students and give guest lectures.
    • Involve former students in recruitment, friend raising and fund raising.
  6. Develop a culture of assessment and continuous improvement.
    • Review the curriculum and its purpose regularly to ensure its relevancy, inclusiveness, and currency.
    • Offer support and incentives for continuous improvement.
